Differences between Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and CFS (In revision and in reply to by Larrin Carney) Dr. E G Dowsett MB ChB.Dip.Bact. Honorary Consultant Microbiologist South Essex Health Trust (In revision and in reply to, 31th August 2025 by Larrin Carney) There is no such disease(s) as CFS.  FATIGUE is a common component of normal life/not always relieved by ‘rest’ unless that means a prolonged holiday or stay in a sanatorium/asylum - ask any harassed mother of a large family.  FATIGUE is a common component of any infectious disease eg: Bacterial (tuberculosis) or Viral (influenza) and thousands of others including AIDS, Lyme Disease, Syphilis, Hepatitis etc... FATIGUE is a common component of any prolonged physical stress (lack of sleep, care of the seriously ill, shift work etc). Physiological FATIGUE : hormonal (eg childbirth, menopause, adolescence) Cardiovascular : (includes anaemia from any cause eg: Leukaemia) Central Nervous System Damage (as in M.E....

M.E. AND RE-DEFINITIONS OF CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME - A 20TH CENTURY PHENOMENON (In revision and in reply to by Larrin Carney) by Dr. E.G. Dowsett MB ChB Dip.Bact (In revision and in reply to, 31th August 2025 by Larrin Carney) INTRODUCTION If the cause of a disease, the way in which it is acquired and the processes by which damage is caused are known, no definition is needed. To the very few physicians still practicing today who began seeing patients with this illness some 40 years ago and who have continued to record and publish their clinical findings throughout, the current enthusiasm for renaming and reassigning this serious disability to subgroups of putative and vague “fatigue” entities, must appear more of a marketing exercise than a rational basis for essential international research. It was not always so unnecessarily complicated.  MODERN DESCRIPTIVE OR RESEARCH DEFINITIONS OF M.E. AND CFS These have gradually evolved, depending on the technology available thr...

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (also known as "Enteroviral Encephalomyelitis") and "Lake Tahoe" Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (also known as "Enteroviral Encephalitis") A Short Introductory Leaflet Prepared by Dr. E G Dowsett MB ChB.Dip.Bact. Honorary Consultant Microbiologist South Essex Health Trust May 1997 (Revised February 1998, and further revised and in reply to, 31st August 2025 by Larrin Carney) INTRODUCTION Owing to it's close clinical and epidemiological similarity to Non-Paralytic Poliomyelitis , this illness was known as " Atypical Poliomyelitis " until the mid 1950's. A more descriptive term ( Myalgic Encephalomyelitis ) adopted in the UK (Lancet 1956) remains popular in many countries including Australia. In 1988, new designations were put forward in the USA. The emphasis ...

THE FATIGUE STATES (RESEARCH DEFINITIONS 1988-2015) The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) first defined Chronic Fatigue Syndrome , with great emphasis on the word " FATIGUE ", in 1988. This definition, referred to as " Holmes ",... was later replaced by the 1994 " Fukuda ".... In 1996 a report of a joint working group of the Royal Colleges of Physicians, Psychiatrists, and General Practitioners on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome was produced by Simon Wessely This 1996 report talked about the various different Non-Diagnosis of Exclusion Chronic Fatigue Syndromes Criterias ( Oxford , Holmes , Fukuda ) and suggested that  Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (also known as Enteroviral Encephalomyelitis ) was another " specific disease entity " and that they were unaware  of any satisfactory definition of M.E. , and doubt whether an operational definition of   M.E. is either...
